Pantry Door Ideas!

Amber RandhawaHomeowner and Homebuyer Tips, Interior Decorating

Upgrading your pantry doors is a great way to change the look of your kitchen, especially if you’re just not ready for the expense and trouble of completely refacing cabinets or redoing your floors. The pantry tends to be a focal point of your kitchen – you go in and out multiple times each day, and it’s likely the largest flat plane of space in your kitchen after your refrigerator. Why not kick things up a notch and let your own personal design style shine through with it’s door?  Read on for some of our favorite trends in pantry door design.

Sliding (Barn or Not) Doors

Has any door trend been more popular in recent years than the simple sliding barn door?  They’re everywhere, and their popularity shows no signs of fading. We love the farmhouse look of the barn door, but the same idea can be used for hanging other unconventional doors as well. With a few additional pieces of hardware, a traditional exterior door can be hung on the track. Or you can have space cut in a barn door for a frosted glass panel to further update the look. You need to have plenty of room for the door to slide from side to side, but if you have the space for it, a non-traditional door on a sliding track makes a wonderful unique addition to your kitchen.

Open Views

Are you an organizing pro and want to show off your skills? If you have a large, well designed pantry with everything in its proper place, you can embrace the trend of having a pantry door with an open view. A traditional porch screen door with intricate wood detail and see through screen is the perfect addition to a modern shabby chic kitchen. For something more rustic/industrial, wire screen doors are another fun option, if you can creatively integrate the look into the rest of your kitchen decor.

Fabric Accents

Not quite organized enough to show off your pantry to the world?  The same doors that are see through in places can be made opaque with fabric, and you can choose a color and print that matches the rest of your kitchen decor, such as window treatments and linens.  The door itself can be painted and or distressed to match your island or cabinetry, for a streamlined look through the kitchen.  This trend works best with a rustic or farmhouse kitchen style.

Chalkboard/Magnet Doors

Do you want your pantry doors to multitask?  A chalkboard finish allows you to track kids’ chores and activities, leave family messages, announce the weekly menu and keep a shopping list in view without giving up additional wall space, or requiring the purchase of a separate board. Add a magnetic element and you can also pin notes and flyers in view. You also don’t necessarily need to purchase a new door to achieve this look. Three coats of magnetic paint followed by 2 coats of chalkboard paint on your existing door is all you need to transform your pantry door into a central messaging system.
