Decorating with Living Coral, 2019’s Color of the Year

Amber RandhawaInterior Decorating

The spring home improvement season is in full swing, and we are all busy decluttering, rearranging and for some of us, redecorating.  Whether that means a fresh coat of paint, replacing furniture or simply freshening a room’s look with a few accent pieces, you can’t go wrong by incorporating the Pantone 2019 Color of the Year into your design plans. This year’s winning shade is Living Coral, a vibrant and bold hue that is shaking up palettes nationwide.  How should you use it in your home?  Read on for some design ideas featuring 2019’s hottest shade!

Liven Up Your Living Room

The easiest option for adding a little coral to your room is with throw pillows. This shade works particularly well against a neutral furniture fabric, giving new life to a white or beige couch. No need to worry if your sofa shade is a bit darker – coral accents can also work to lighten a room that has darker fabric choices. You can also consider incorporating coral as part of an area rug, or using accent vases.  Ready to go big?  A large furniture piece in this shade makes a wonderful color statement! Accessorize with neutral pillows and consider a neutral shade for any matching chairs or chaises. Painting one accent wall in coral to act as a backdrop works for both lighter and darker furniture colors.

Adding Coral to A Bedroom

You may be understandably hesitant to add too many bold or bright pieces to a serene sleep space.  Add the color sparingly at first, in the form of large pillow shams or in the base of a bedside lamp. Or you may choose to add coral pillar candles to a nightstand or accent table. Framed prints and hanging tapestries featuring coral as part of the design add excitement to a neutrally painted wall. If you decide to go a step further, a side chair or bench in a bright coral hue are great options.

Brighten the Bathroom

Add warmth to a neutral bathroom with coral towels, rugs and shower curtains. Changing your bathroom textiles is a fast and easy way to change the color dynamic of the entire room. Consider a shower curtain with a coral ombre effect – the colors can darken as that go up or down. Add towels in one of the darker shades to make a statement against a neutral room, or match to the lighter shade if you are trying to add depth and dimension to a small space.

Kick Your Kitchen Up a Notch

Much like your bathroom textiles can easily be changed out to breathe new life into a room, the same can be done with your kitchen towels, curtains and rugs. Windowsill flower pots painted in a coral shade look wonderful against a neutral paint color, and work well filled with the green of an herb collection or with a brightly colored bloom. Or brighten up your breakfast nook with casual coral place settings.
