Tiffany StaplesHomeowner and Homebuyer Tips

Football games, Halloween, fall festivals, and crisp air are reminders that the fall season is upon us. While it might not be cooling down by tremendous amounts here in Georgia, the weather will soon start to shift and we will start feeling that fall air soon. Make sure you and your home are ready to usher in the fall season with these simple tips for getting your home ready for fall.
#1. Have your heating system serviced and inspected.
While temperatures begin to fall, the last thing you want to be left with is a heating system that doesn’t work properly! Avoid the last-minute fees to hire a HVAC service in a pinch by thinking ahead and servicing your system before it goes out or you encounter problems. This will save you money and ensure that your system is in top working order. You may also consider changing your air filters throughout your house.
#2. Check your chimney and fireplace.
Do you have a wood-burning fireplace? If you are looking to start lighting it up, be safe about it – have your fireplace professionally cleaned and inspected to be certain the flu is working properly and dangerous chemicals like creosote are not present at unhealthy rates.
#3. Clean your gutters and visibly inspect your roof.
This sounds like a monumental task, doesn’t it? If done regularly, this won’t be too much of a hassle! Whether you hire a professional or do it yourself, ensuring that your home has proper drainage by removing and debris or leaves (especially before more leaves fall) is a must-do. Visibly inspect your roof as well to ensure that leaves are not piled on your roof, shingles are not missing or loose, or that water is not pooling in certain sections.
#4. Prepare your plants and shrubs accordingly.
Did you just plant new plants this year? Hoping to save some of your plants that make or break your outside landscape? Be sure to trim your trees and bushes to appropriate heights for your climate, as well as shield fragile plants and blooms from harsher conditions. As fall moves into winter and freeze warnings are initiated, be sure to wrap your plants to provide a more stable environment for them.
#5. Do some fall cleaning!
Everyone things spring cleaning is a big deal… right?! Why not fall cleaning? Pack away any items that are warm weather specific, like summer clothing, lawn equipment and tools that aren’t needed in the fall, as well as any liquids that could potentially freeze in cooler temperatures. This will provide more space in your home and it will ensure your items are safely stored until you need them for the next season.
